Member-only story
A few days back, I walked into a somewhat-posh restaurant. There was a person who was supposed to help the guests getting seated. I went to her and and uttered the same words I do at every restaurant.
“Table for One”.
As usual, she paused for a second, and repeated what I said, slightly bewildered. “Table for one, you said?”
“Yes!”, I replied with a smile.
Minutes later, she directed me to a table. I had my meal, paid the bill, tipped the waitress generously, and then walked out. When I walked out, she made sure to check my receipt to see if I paid. While asking for a ‘table for one’ at a somewhat-posh restaurant could be weird, the way I was entertained was a little insulting. When I walked out the door, I made sure that I would never visit that restaurant again. However, when I drove back home that night, I reflected on this incident.
Why do tables have a minimum of two chairs in a restaurant? Of course there are bar stools in bars and cafes, but is a person only allowed to douse themselves in caffeine and alcohol alone? Why can’t someone have a ‘fine dining experience’ just by themselves?
