New Years Don’t Excite Me Anymore, but Terrify Me Instead!

It’s about that time of the year when the long lost friend who is now nothing more than an acquaintance sends a ‘Happy New Year’ message to me on WhatsApp. There’s also that lovely GIF of fireworks attached to it. I guess we are the only species that celebrates the Earth going around the sun another time. At least the bears spend New Years’ better than us — hibernating.

I Missed the Point

The fun, glitz and glory of New Year never really had any appeal to me. I remember asking my mom why people celebrate New Year when I was a kid. With my parents, I used to go to church to attend the watchnight service until my early teens. What better way to spend the New Year other than sitting in church and listening to the pastor asking you to Thank God for all the blessings he had bestowed upon you in the previous year! The truth, which I later realized, was that the church just wanted to make some additional income in offerings for the new year. I mean, why not?
