6 Life Lessons From Movies That Could Help You Find Hope in Tough Times

Life can get hard, especially if you are a normal middle-class employee who toils every day at work just to take home some money that barely pays your bills. In unexpected situations, you may end up not knowing what to do or in which direction your life is headed.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, but there is only so much one could do. Once you’ve done your best, you can only hope and wait, like I’ve been hoping to win the lottery over the last two years.

Jokes apart, finding hope is not easy even when we are happy. In times when you are sad and stressed, finding hope is hard. When I usually feel down or feel like giving up, I always watch a light-hearted, inspirational movie. Believe it not, I have learned many life lessons from these movies and I wanted to share some of them.

“Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. I will be hoping that this letter finds you, and finds you well.” — Andy, The Shawshank Redemption

It wasn’t a blockbuster movie, but The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most-watched movies in the world. In fact, it is rated as a top movie on IMDB and tops many of the ‘best movie lists’ that you can find on the internet.

The movie is about friendship and hope between the two main characters, Andy and Red. There are many other great quotes from The Shawshank Redemption, but this is my most favourite. I wouldn’t be surprised if this rings a bell to you, because it is a famous quote.

It is hard to find hope in tough times, but always remember — hope is a good thing! At the end of a bad day, we all need at least need a little hope that the next day would be better. Eventually, hope helps us stay alive.

My momma always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” —Forrest Gump, Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption have a few things in common. For starters, they were made and released in the same era. Tom Hanks was initially cast to play ‘Andy’ in The Shawshank Redemption. However, both movies turned out to be masterpieces, and if you’d ask me to, I would watch them at any time.

Tom Hanks did an exemplary job playing Forrest Gump, and it’s hard not to fall in love with this cute character. Life certainly is a box of chocolates. While we make anticipate how our life would be tomorrow, it does not go always as planned. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. At the end of the day, what matters is how you react to the circumstances.

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” — John Keating, Dead Poets Society

This movie was released a couple of years before I was even born, but it is still one of the best films I have ever watched. Robin Williams plays the character of John Keating and does more than enough justice to the script.

Dead Poets Society emphasizes the need for art and its significance in our lives. Words and ideas have changed the world and always will. If not, I wouldn’t even be writing this article, and you wouldn’t be reading it. And that’s something else to live for!

“There should be no boundaries to human endeavor. We are all different. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there’s life, there is hope.” — Stephen Hawking, The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything is a remarkable film about the book written by Stephen Hawking. The movie is much different from the book, but it is nothing short of inspirational. While Hawking himself is an inspiration to the universe, this quote from the movie again talks about hope.

Red’s quote from The Shawshank Redemption mentions that hope is a good thing, and that it never dies. Hawking’s quote here says that hope exists wherever there is life. If you compare both the quotes, you will understand that they have an outstanding correlation.

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” — Walter Mitty, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I only read reviews after I watch any movie so that it does not alter my perception in any way. When I chose to watch this movie, I did so because I thought it would be a light-hearted comedy.

While it is quite funny overall, there are some quotes in the movie that are deep. This is one of them. In this day and age, living by yourself and paying bills is hard, in the first place. But this quote reminds you to go above and beyond that to experience new adventures and find your soulmate. I almost gave up on that, until I watched this movie. Reading this quote again gives me more hope that I will do this someday.

“Our lives are defined by opportunities, even the ones we miss.” — Benjamin Button, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is another great movie of our time. It is purely practical and inspirational in every aspect. There are many quotes about life and opportunities and almost every one of these quotes talks about not missing those opportunities that come by. Sometimes, you may miss opportunities, because they define your life as well.

So whatever life may throw at you, hold on to it and make the best of what you’ve got. As long as there is hope, there is life.

Living, learning and inspiring, one quarter mile at a time.
